Miles Franklin Award 2013 Shortlist

In the midst of all these shortlists being announced it has been very remiss of me to neglect Australia's "most prestigious"  literary prize, the Miles Franklin. Last Tuesday the shortlist was announced, and this year it is a list featuring all female writers.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday 19 June 2013 at the National Library of Australia in Canberra with the lucky writer taking home $60,000. The winning novel has to be judged as having the highest literary merit and "must present Australian life in any of its phases" as part of the award's establishment. The Award was established from the estate of the author of "My Brilliant Career" to support and encourage authors of Australian literature. Shortlisted authors receive $5,000. The shortlist is:

Floundering by Romy Ash
The Beloved by Annah Faulkner
Questions of Travel by Michelle de Kretser
The Mountain by Drusilla Modjeska
Mateship with Birds by Carrie Tiffany

Depending on how I get through the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the IMPAC Dublin Literary Prize and the Pulitzer Prize lists I may get to these novels as well.

Apologies for taking a week to get to our most prominent literary prize's shortlist. For more details and author bios and novel synopses go to http://www.milesfranklin.com.au/news
